Cape Verde
In the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa lies an island country comprised of 10 islands known as The Republic of Cape Verde. Verde is the Portuguese word for green but little rainfall each year makes it difficult for the landscape to live up to its name. Since not all towns have electricity, the main entertainment is music with a heavy creole influence. Well-known jazz piano artist, Harold Silver, was born in Cape Verde. Colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th Century, dance is influenced by Portuguese and African rhythms. Only basic education is available in Cape Verde with instruction in Portuguese to students who only speak creole at home.
