Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo-Kinshasa, Zaire, Belgian Congo) referred to as DRC is a country located in Central Africa. See Congo above for the generic term that sometimes refers to this area. There are a lot of rainforests in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which includes Salonga and Virunga National Parks, Garumba, Okapi Wildlife Reserve, and Kahuzi Biega, that are home to rare species of animals. You can also visit the Institute of the National Museums of Congo if you want to know more about the rich history of the country. In addition, there are several universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo including the Catholique University of Bukavu, University of Kinshasa, and the University of Lubumbashi. The Congolese also celebrate the Day of the Marty every 4th of January. Though independent since 1960, the fragility of the state government has allowed continued conflict and human rights abuses since 1997 when Mobutu named the country the Democratic Republic of Congo. Conflict in the DRC continues today although in 2003 a transitional constitution was developed which was formalized in 2006 with elections resulting in a bicameral legislature.
