Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic, located on the island of Hispaniola, is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the island gained its independence from Haiti on February 27, 1844. Famous landmarks include "The Alcazar de Colon", and "The Faro a Colon", in Santo Domingo. The "Bahia del Ricon" in the Samana peninsula, is an archeological site dating to the pre-Columbian era, containing visible fragments of ancient settlements in the area. Events and Festivals are based on religious and musical traditions. Every city in the Dominican Republic has its "Fiestas Patronales" or the celebration of their favorite Catholic saint. Another significant celebration is the Carnaval, which celebrated every Sunday in the month of February, in the cities of La Vega, Santo Domingo, Monte Crsiti and San Cristobal. Favorite tourist spots include Santo Domingo, The Bahia de la Jina in the north coast, and Cayo Levantdo in the tiny island of Samana Bay.
