Gabon
The west central African country of Gabon introduced a multi-party system and a new democratic constitution in the 1990's. The Democratic Party of Gabon (PDG)'s historical dominance also has served to unite various ethnicities and local interests into a larger whole. It's medical attention is among the best in West Africa though it has one of the lowest population densities of any country in Africa. There are now 28 hospitals, 312 infirmaries and 82 medical centers. Physicians are 29 per 100,000 people. The maternal mortality rate has dropped since 2004 and the infant mortality rate has gone down since then too, though HIV-AIDS prevalence was approximately 8% among adults at that time.
