Lagoon and hiking tours, bird watching and swimming, snorkeling, fishing and scuba diving are all popular activities here. Christmas island, near a site of 1957 hydrogen bomb testing, the island is now home to artifacts and relics of the time. Visitors can also take a tour of the Parliament Building, or visit the Kiribati National Library and Archives. The republic has been inhabited by Micronesians speaking the same language since between 3000 BC and AD 1300. British and Americans sighted the islands in the late eighteenth century.
