Korea (South)
South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is a free market, democratic republic. At the end of World War II, in 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea and Soviet troops occupied north of the 38th parallel, while U.S. troops surrendered south of it. This parallel soon became the basis for the division of Korea by the two superpowers and remains today. The KBS Symphony Orchestra began in 1956 when the Korean Broadcasting System saw the need for a radio orchestra. The orchestra is world-class with a history of international conductors. This has served to raise the public awareness of South Korean musical accomplishment.
