Mongolia

Mongolia, which is bordered by Russia and China, has numerous rivers, some draining into the Arctic Ocean, others into the Pacific. The Selenge River is the largest river in both Russia and Mongolia and traverses close to one thousand kilometers before draining into Lake Baikal. The Mongol Empire was established by Genghis Khan in the twelve hundreds and in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the country became, in large part, Tibetan Buddhist. It came under strong Russian and Chinese influence in the early twentieth century until in 1924, the Mongolian People's Republic was formed. At the end of the century the country transitioned to a market economy. It is the most sparsely populated independent country in the world.
