Because of it location on the Adriatic Sea and love of water sports, water polo has become a national sport in Montenegro. The Montenegro national team won a gold medal in the 2008 European Championships. The team, comprising 15 players from the different local clubs, continues to dominate the European water polo circuit. From 1918, it was a part of Yugoslavia but declared independence in 2006.
