Samoa

Samoa, a country encompassing the western part of the Samoan Islands in the South Pacific Ocean, has many festivals and celebrations. It is halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand in the Polynesian region of the Pacific Ocean. The Teuila Festival, which happens early in September, is Somoa's largest festival. Celebrations at the festival include fautasi (longboat) racing, fire knife dancing, woodcarving, the crowning of Miss Somoa, and the choir hymnal exhibition. The World FireKnife Competition and Samoa Festival, held in the spring, is produced by the Polynesian Cultural Center. This includes high school competitions in a number of traditional Samoan customs like coconut husking, basket weaving, fire making and more. All of the islands have volcanic origins, but only Savai'i, the western most island in Samoa, is volcanically active.
