Somali Democratic Republic
Somali Democratic Republic or what is commonly known today as Somalia may be a land in the clutches of civil war. Former President of Somalia Major General Mohamed Siad Barre, placed an emphasis on Somalia's traditional and religious links with the Arab world and in 1974 the country joined the Arab League. The Somalia Football Federation is officially recognized by FIFA and currently have a full national team that has enjoyed at least recognition on the international football scene. The Somali Basketball Association has also made headway with a recent entry of a women's team into a domestic tournament in Kenya.
