Arabic language, society, history and culture can be studied at the Arabic Languages Academy, which is among the various institutes of higher education in Syria which include five state and eleven private universities. The country of Syria is in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest and is home to a number of wildlife species that include the porcupine, the squirrel, the hare and the wildcat. The country’s longest river is the Euphrates River that supplies much of the water needed for agriculture. One of the popular landmarks in the country includes an ancient city built on an oasis in the Syrian Desert. The city was called Palmyra. The ancient ruins of Palmyra make it a popular tourist spot.
