Tonga

Tonga, made up of 176 islands in the South Pacific, has a rich Polynesian history and heritage that dates 3000 years back. The Langi Tombs are royal tombs that are somewhat similar to the pyramids of Egypt. Here the Sacred Kings of Toga were laid to rest. On the other hand, Olovehi Tomb is the burial place of one of the few females to have reigned as King. In Tongan tradition women enjoy a higher social status than men. Hihifo village in Lifuka is an excavation site that places the first settlers to the island some 3 millennia back. Plans to grow the economy include upgrading agricultural productivity in the squash and vanilla bean industries, developing tourism and improving the transportation infrastructure. Handicrafts are important to the economy as well and are sold in places such as the Langafonua gallery and the Women's Handicraft Association in Vava'u.
