Tunisia
Tourists visit the country of Tunisia, the northernmost country in Africa, for some of the finest beaches in all of Africa at Jarbah and Hammamet. Archaeological sites such as the ancient city of Carthage and the Roman ruins at El Djem and Dougga serve as Tunisia's popular tourist landmarks. The country has a variety of wildlife including, cobra's, horned vipers, hyena, wild boar and jackals. Oranges and other citrus fruits are grown there andin the arid areas of the country palms flourish at oases. The Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert which covers part of the country, contribute to biodiversity in Tunisia. There was a civil war in 2010-2011 caused by high unemployment, inflation and poor living conditions which resulted in President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali stepping down in January 2011. Unfortunately unrest continues today here and in elsewhere in North Africa and the Middle East.
